Project Boss 302…
UPDATE 6….Body WORK
|
|
|
|
We have made a lot of progress on the Boss….I
t has a Hood Sock System that keeps the Hood up without the use of the factory prop rod. This makes working
on the car and engine compartment much easier as we do not have to work around the prop rod, and the hood opens about 4-5
inches further, so access has been increased. We added the Engine breather System so the intake track stays
cleaner and the reservoir hold an oil trapped by the filters. The Strut Towers have been spruced up with
Billet Aluminum Caps and Threaded Stud & nut Hiders. This gives a clean and un-cluttered look.
In Update 4, we worked on bettering the braking system. We added new DBR 2-piece rotors to the front
and DBA single piece rotors to the back. These allowed for better stopping by keeping the braking surface
cooler longer, and providing venting for gas build-up during hard braking exercise. Furthermore we removed
the Calipers and cleaned, painted and applied Brembo Decals to them. This was purely aesthetic and will
improve the looks of the brakes and car. New Brake Lines were installed, as these will provide a firmer,
more sporty brake pedal feel, which will result in a performance up-grade. These should also be seen as
a safety up-grade as they are stronger then OEM stock lines and will hold up to more abuse and resist cuts and dings better
as well. Our new Hurst line-Lock was purely performance as we can use it to provide car placement for staging
or when making a burn out. Least, we replaced the OEM brake Fluid with a 100% synthetic formula that will
not only have a higher boiling point for high performance use, but last longer and promote less brake component were.
In Update 5, we concentrated on mechanical grip and handling. We removed the OEM sway bar and painted
it to match the other components added. We removed the OEM track bar and replaced that assembly with a
different and better system, the Watts Link, from WhiteLine. This will improve handling, decrease rear-end
step-out worries, and provide a much stouter rear end set-up. The Axle Center-Section that was part of
the Watts Link Kit, will improve rear end cooling and add strength to the rear gear assembly. Our Swarr
bar, was installed to add strength to the rear axle housing. This will allow our car to practice in Road
Racing, Auto-Cross and other Road Sports without worry of Rear Axle Housing stress and problems. In Update
5A, we added a new jacking rail, so we could lift our Boss 302 up off the ground without worry of damaging the body or chassis.
The bars we added, will provide this area for lifting, and improve chassis strength and stiffness. Most
all the parts we add up to now have been concentrated on areas that will improve, strength, safety, performance and serviceability. For the next step in our Boss evolution….We will concentrate
now on improving vehicle aesthetic, and providing personal accents that reflect our sense of style. In
this section we will be adding accents to the whole car, both front & rear and inside and out. Because
this section is so big and all encompassing, we will split it into 4 sections. equipment
they have there. I learned more in one day then I had in 30 years of daily driving, it's simply a must
for the competitive driver!
Our Splitter will be painted School Bus Yellow like the car, and have a Carbon Fiber print added with a clear coat
finish applied over everything. This gives us a very unusual finish that will set our car apart from all
others and allow it to provide the down force needed to compete on tract. We are also adding front Fog
lights in the normal 2013-14 Mustang area, but at the same time adding a set of grill lights where the 2010-12 mustangs had
them. Again, this will serve several functions. We will have additional front lighting
for better driving in dark conditions, both close down on the roadway and higher in the middle of the grill. This
will also serve to make our 2013 Boss look much different than any other Boss 302 out there. Boss's
do not come with a Fog Light option…so right away, we will have a Boss with factory Fog Lights…pretty cool.
Then, were the middle grill is, they have fake lamp rings. These were installed on 2010 and earlier
model, but discontinued and only the trim rings remained. Here we will install the factory grill lights
and have everything working like factory, using factory parts for easy replacement and excellent fit. All
wiring will use factory harness's, and plug right into the factory headlamp switch. To
change things up even more, we purchased a new grill shell, and will have it painted the same Yellow
/Carbon Fiber as the splitter, but the outside trim ring will be Black/Carbon Fiber
for a nice accent. We will also change out the Hood
Vents, these come body color matched, and just do not provide the spark I think they should. The color
difference will make these same vents stand out against that huge see of yellow, the hood has. The vents
while functional, are just not very interesting painted in the main body color, let's hope that when we install our new
vents they do the trick, and add an extra accent to that area. Same goes for the Mirror Covers, those on
the door mirrors. We purchased new covers to give this area some extra pizzazz, and make for a nice accessory.
In the rear of the car, we went with a new Shelly GT 500 rear wing. This wing is larger and more
pronounced then the Boss wing, so right away it will stand out, but combined with the new Yellow/Carbon
Fiber paint I hope it will accent that section of the car in a positive way. This wing also has
an adjustable Gurney Flap, which we painted a contrasting Black/Carbon Fiber.
Inside, we purchased a new Steering Wheel for future use, added some door trim accents in Yellow/Carbon Fiber to liven
up the inside and -placed those control switches for the Hurst Line Lock, and wired in the new Fog Lights. I
really hope you like this section of our build, I have given this considerable thought and felt good when we finally settled
on a look and order up the parts. We are sending our painted parts to Florida. Southeast Carbon
Works will be handling the painting and coating of all parts for this project. They do some amazing
work, and I even decided to build a display engine showing the many neat part ideals you can do with your engine as well as
car. We will feature this display engine at our shop and post numerous pictures on the web, so future customers
of engine builds can see the many possibilities and hopefully explore those features on their next

The above is a master list of Parts, part Numbers, prices and Descriptions of each.
These are the main Body and mechanical parts we will paint & Install in Body Work 6.0 Up-Grade. This
section was so big and detailed, we decided to break it down and cover the installation by section, rather than lump it all
together and have a huge section, that would be hard to remember, and make future reference harder. 6.0
Is just this, it outlines what we wanted to do, where we got the parts and what parts we did purchase. The
chart above is for your reference, just in case you wanted or needed any of the parts we purchased, so we included all the
information needed, plus the price we paid for reference. You may be able to find a better deal than we
did? I find some dealers willing to let some parts go cheaper, and other more expensive, so the dealer
we went with, Tasca Ford, had the best overall deal. Meaning, you have to consider the
price of each item, the cost of shipping that item, and the willingness of the dealer to work with you, both on price but
also in looking up the parts, and dealing with multiple inquires. I was very happy with the way Tasca Ford
handled our order. More importantly, I was very happy with how they handled us inquiring on all these parts,
many times calling and getting the information, prior to the final order. Many parts dealers are not that
keen on looking up parts only to have to wait till latter for an order, plus we had parts shipping to our home address plus
others shipping to a business in Florida. Split orders are more work, and some dislike that ideal.
In all , it took some 6 weeks to find the best price and best dealer to work with. You may have
your favorite Ford dealers all ready, but I have found both Tasca Ford and Silver Springs Ford
to be great people to deal with, I use them almost exclusively on regular orders of Ford parts. This order
was special because of the amount of parts, difference in parts and special considerations. Our two regular
sources were both competitive and helpful during the process, it was simply a product of one had to get the order, so I choose
Tasca, but would have been just as happy to use Silver Springs Ford. I always shop around, today you cannot afford to not to.
Prices vary, some have specials and we often get discount offers from competitors, so I like to stay informed.
What I will not do is go back to a source that had bad customer service or ordering problems, it's not worth the
little you might save. Also, check out the return policy and feedback of any potential supplier, many have
extraordinary return fees and or return procedures, and feedback is another safety cheek for satisfied customers.
All our parts that have to be painted are
being shipped to Southeast Carbon Works. This is a very neat shop that specializes in custom painting and special application
graphics. Our parts will be painted to match the body color, which is Ford 2013 School Bus Yellow with
a Carbon Fiber printing, or they will be a contrasting Black-Dark Carbon Fiber print. The look is unusual,
and very cool. They do many different patterns, and if you check out their web site you will see just what
bizarre and wonderful things they are capable of doing. I choose the Carbon Fiber look, why? I guess I
like it? There are about a dozen pattern I like, so you have to go with one don't you?
I first found out about Southeast Carbon Works
while reading over some post on Boss 302 on-line. There a fellow poster, had some work done on his car
and I really liked the look. While I'm not trying to copy what he did, I do admire it.
We are going to do our own thing here, which includes a mix of front, back, inside and under the hood treatments.
If you look at the schedule I provided above, you will see what parts we will replace and the color/pattern of each.
Front Section:
Here I have always planned to remove the stock Boss 302 front splitter and replace it with the Boss 302 LS
or S splitter. This one is larger and more pronounced, plus it has the adjusters that hold it
up, which I like. As stated in an earlier build, we purchased a GT Fog Light Kit for the front end, plus
we purchased a Grill Light Kit, which we will have painted in this section. The addition
of the two kits will make our car look much different than any other Boss or GT Mustang on the road. The
Grill Light kit, came with a new upper grill, and grill surround, plus a chrome Mustang pony emblem. The
grill will be painted Yellow/Carbon Fiber while the Grill Surround will be painted
a Black/Carbon Fiber. The idea is to play the two colors off each
other for a unique look. In looking at the front of the car, you will have the normal yellow, but then
a thin layer of black CF before a grill painted in Yellow/Carbon Fiber.
We will also tint the Grill Light Yellow, for a even more different look. The
lower Fog Lights, will remain standard OEM black. I'm hoping for a racy custom look, we'll see.
Of-coarse this all means most of the front body work will have to come off, so I am waiting to finish the front WhiteLine
sway-bar installation until we have all the parts done and ready, then I will install everything located in that area at one
time. I do not want to take the front end apart over and over, those plastic clips and push-pins are not
meant to be installed and removed to many times before they break, and that's the last thing I want to deal with.
Just a heads up, so when you view the pictures and see body work in the back ground on the sway bar article, you no
what's going on. This will be true elsewhere also, so heads up. Back Section: The rear of the car is not so busy, here we are just really going to install a GT 500 wing
or spoiler. I like the look of this wing much better than that of the stock Boss 302 spoiler, so I'm
replacing it with a Yellow/Carbon Fiber wing, and the Gurney strip will be a contrasting
Black/Carbon Fiber. This is a separate aluminum section right at
the end and center of the spoiler that is removable, almost like a wicker bill. Under the Hood: This is the most busy area on the car, and we have several items to replace and paint. First
the most noticeable part will be the Radiator Upper Cover, it is the section you see as soon as you open
the hood, that flat surface where the hood latch is. This will be Yellow/Carbon
Fiber. Next and right behind the cover will be the Coolant Recovery Bottle.
Our new one will also be Yellow/Carbon Fiber. Below
and to the right of the bottle, is the Electrical Fuse Box. Here we purchased a new Lid
and it too will be Yellow/Carbon Fiber. Working our way back to
the engine, the Coil Covers will be painted Yellow/Carbon Fiber as
well, which should look very nice on the side of the engine. Last but not least, we got a new Strut
Brace Bar and it also will be covered in Yellow/Carbon Fiber Paint.
Together, with all the modifications we already made to the under hood area, I think this will really lighten up this
area, and make for a beautiful view. Inside: Here we only did a few accent pieces in the Carbon Fiber.
First, we purchased new Door Grommets, the part where the door lock goes up and down.
These are very small, but will provide a color contrast inside the cabin, that should help ty the whole thing together.
Then we chose to replace a small trim section on the Door Panel, These will be the Yellow Carbon Fiber like most other parts. Besides those small pieces, we will add a Ford
Interior Lighting Kit, this adds several key lighting areas that were left off the Boss model, and allows
for ambient light control. A nice touch that allows you to set a mood by changing the interior light color.
We also purchased a new Steering wheel. This is mainly a prevention method, as
the stock steering wheel is very, very comfortable and made from Alcantara leather, which I presume will get pretty dirty over the years, so to combat that and preserve
future value, I purchased a replacement to be stored till needed. Why not wait till it's needed?
Because by then it will not be available, as it is a very limited production part. Better
to get it now while its available and still reasonable in price. The Boss like many other special, limited
edition vehicles, will be a collectors car, and keeping abreast of future needs will only increase future value.
Oh, I will never sell this car, but my Son or grandson might….
Enjoy the coming installation articles, and if you like what you see….Give the guys at Southeast Carbon Works
a shout. Southeast Carbon Works
